Common questions

How do I log food?

Say what you ate, like “two eggs and toast.” Herrkos turns it into entries you can check and edit. You can also scan a barcode, take a photo of a kitchen scale or a Nutrition Facts label, or type an entry. On Apple Watch, you can log by voice too.

Calories come from USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts, a label, or you. The AI only works out what you meant. It never makes up the numbers.

What AI does it use? Do I need an API key?

By default, Herrkos uses Apple Intelligence on your device. No key is needed, and what you say stays on your device.

On devices without Apple Intelligence, you can add your own API key for OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), another AI service that uses the OpenAI format, or a server you run yourself, such as Ollama. This is off by default, asks you to confirm, and never turns on by itself. Only the current words you said and your shortcut names (or, for photos, the current photo and scale text) are sent, directly from your device to the service you chose. Your diary history is not sent. Watch logs can also be sent to one of your devices that has Apple Intelligence.

Is my data private?

Yes. There is no account, no ads, and no analytics or tracking. The developer runs no server, so your diary, recordings, transcripts and photos never reach us. Voice transcription and label or scale reading happen on your device. Your API keys stay in the iOS Keychain.

The details are in the privacy policy.

How do I back up or move to a new iPhone?

  • iCloud Sync. If it's on, sign in to the same Apple Account on your new iPhone and your diary comes back.
  • Normal iPhone backups. Your diary is part of your iCloud or computer backup, so Quick Start or a restore moves it.
  • Export. In Settings, export a backup file and import it on the new device. You can protect it with a password. Keep that password safe: it is never stored and can't be recovered.
  • Automatic backups. You can turn on weekly, password-protected backups to a folder you choose.

API keys are never included in backups or sync. Add them again on the new device.

How does iCloud Sync work?

iCloud Sync is off unless you turn it on in Settings. It stores your diary, foods, shortcuts, goals, weight entries and notes in your own private iCloud database, using Apple's CloudKit, so your iPhone and iPad match. The developer cannot access it. API keys and settings kept in the Keychain are not synced.

How do I delete my data?

  • One entry: swipe it in your diary and tap Delete.
  • Everything: use the delete-all-data control in Settings. It removes all app data, including API keys. With iCloud Sync on, it also removes the synced copy from your iCloud and your other devices.
  • Deleting the app removes its data from the device, but copies can remain in your iPhone backups.

If iCloud Sync is on, your diary is also in your private iCloud. If you use Apple Health, entries Herrkos saved there are managed in the Health app. Exports and automatic backups are files you keep, so delete them from the folder where you saved them. If you're unsure, email us and we'll help.
